Ride the Iconic Coastal Stretch of the Great Taste Trail with the Priceless Bonus of Uncrowded Cycle Paths.
The Great Taste Trail between Kaiteriteri and Māpua is one of the most scenic cycling routes in Nelson Tasman. Starting at either Kaiteriteri’s golden beach or the quiet little settlement of Riwaka, riders enjoy native bush, coastal views, orchards, cafés, and rural vistas—all in one easy, one‑way ride.
Kaiteriteri to Motueka: Beaches, Bush, and Coastal Views
Begin at Kaiteriteri, famous for its golden sand and turquoise water. The trail leads through the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park, offering shaded native bush and a different view around every corner ( there are a few corners along this 4km stretch of trail!) If you want a shorter ride (35kms) with an easier start to your route, then Riwaka makes the perfect start point. This start point avoids the Mountain Bike Park section, so avoiding the first few Kms of hills and narrower track through the park. This is a great option if you haven’t ridden a bike (even an e-bike) for a while.
Riwaka to Tasman: Coastal Spits and Rolling Hills
The trail passes beside Raumanuka Reserve with a coastal spit—one of the flattest, most scenic sections. Birdlife, tree‑lined paths, and rural landscapes make this stretch ideal for relaxed riding. Rolling hills near Tasman reward riders with panoramic views across the bay and Kahurangi National Park mountain skyline.
Tasman to Māpua : Views, Cafés, and Coastal Charm
The final section from Tasman to Māpua is gentle and picturesque. Riders can stay on the official trail or explore the lesser known Kina Peninsula for a visit to the tranquil Garden House cafe , enjoy vistas at the pretty Tasman golf club ( all welcome to enjoy the view from the clubhouse), beaches, and wide coastal views. The ride finishes at Māpua Wharf, a vibrant hub of restaurants, craft beer, wine bars, galleries, and waterfront relaxation.
