Frequently Asked Questions
General Trip Planning & Logistics
Where do Wheelie Fantastic Cycle Tours start and finish?
Our cycle tours operate throughout the Nelson Tasman region, including Nelson, Mapua, and the Moutere hills. We provide seamless logistics, including passenger transport from your Nelson accommodation or Nelson Airport. You can also have the choice of where to finish to suit your onward travel plans at the conclusion of your tour.
Is luggage transfer included in multi-day cycling tours?
Yes. For all multi-day itineraries along the Great Taste Trail, we provide daily door-to-door luggage transfers. You simply turn up and pedal while your bags are safely moved to your next night’s accommodation.
Can I bring my own bike, or do you provide rentals?
We provide premium, well-maintained trail electric bikes (E-bikes) or sporty gravel bikes, all perfectly suited for the terrain. We also fully welcome cyclists who prefer to bring their own personal bikes on tour.
Tour Customisation & Skill Levels
What fitness level is required for the Great Taste Trail?
The trail accommodates all abilities, from beginners to advanced riders. Because we specialise in bespoke, independent, and small-group tours, we tailor the daily cycling distances, terrain (coastal paths, back roads, or gravel), and bike types to match your requests. We also don’t put strangers into tour groups so you ride the tour at a pace that suits you. One key recommendation is that you have ridden similar distances to those of your tour, so that you are ‘saddle fit’ even if you are going to use an e-bike.
Can your tours be customised for food, wine, or art interests?
Yes. We use our local knowledge to curate specific itineraries that focus on the
region’s artisan wines, local food, craft galleries, and coastal scenery, specifically around the Mapua, Upper Moutere, and Tasman taste clusters.
Safety, Weather & Booking Policies
What happens if it rains during my cycle tour?
Your safety and comfort are our priorities. In the event of poor weather, we activate a reliable backup itinerary (Plan B). This includes vehicle support to transport you and your gear safely past affected trail sections or directly to your next accommodation. If it was a really wet day, you could opt to take a lift and not cycle at all…you wouldn’t be the first customer to enjoy that option!
Are route maps and support provided for self-guided tours?
Yes. For independent cyclists, we provide detailed, up-to-date route notes, and cycle trail maps. Additionally, our team is always just a phone call away for any roadside support or assistance.
When should I book a cycling tour for the upcoming season?
We are currently accepting bookings for the 2026–27 cycling season. Because we focus on high-quality, personalised service for couples and small groups, we highly recommend enquiring early to secure your preferred type of accommodation.
