Great Taste Trail Multi-day tours
For someone who wants something a bit unique, we offer a range of carefully designed Great Taste Trail multi-day tours. These are ready to ride tours, but armed with our local knowledge, you’ll find out-of-the-way places that will delight. If you want it tailored to suit your timeframe or interests, we can easily adapt an itinerary to suit your requests
Our bespoke tours can include non-cycling days such as a sky wire ride, vehicle based guided day tours, and of course a range of options to enjoy the Abel Tasman National Park, Golden Bay or Marlborough Sounds. If that sounds like your type of holiday, check out our Tasman Explorer page
We can also offer our ‘Explore More’ cycle experiences that can be incorporated into a Great Taste Trail Cycle tour. If you like more out of the way, gravel roads, we can add them to your tour.
We have carefully selected gravel routes (a mix of sealed and unsealed back roads) that take you to beautiful locations that are not on the local cycle trail.
What is the best way to ride The Great Taste Trail?
Custom Itineraries
People are not one-size-fits-all, so why should your Nelson cycle tour be? We believe that our up-to-date, local knowledge counts for a lot when you’re planning a cycle tour. The Great Taste Trail can be ridden in different directions and in different order of segments. Our itineraries are well thought out, offering you the best experiences that we know you’ll love.
Local Knowledge
Cyclists will enjoy the varied nature of The Great Taste Trail and the landscapes it passes through, however many ‘tastes’ of the region are off the trail. We can help you find these other locations, even if you choose a self-guided option. Our comprehensive route notes and maps will help you to explore along the way, confident in the knowledge that you won’t cycle past the best coffee stop or scone on your route.
Do It Your Way
Our tours are adaptable, so we can accommodate all abilities, and particular interests within a group. We can even put together itineraries for groups made up of non-cyclists as well as cyclists.
We appreciate that your chosen cycle tour is yours to enjoy, in a way that best suits you, therefore we do not amalgamate groups. We also allocate each group their own tour manager, to take care of any questions and requests the group may have when on tour.
Frequently Asked Questions
General Trip Planning & Logistics
Where do Wheelie Fantastic Cycle Tours start and finish?
Our cycle tours operate throughout the Nelson Tasman region, including Nelson, Mapua, and the Moutere hills. We provide seamless logistics, including passenger transport from your Nelson accommodation or Nelson Airport. You can also have the choice of where to finish to suit your onward travel plans at the conclusion of your tour.
Is luggage transfer included in multi-day cycling tours?
Yes. For all multi-day itineraries along the Great Taste Trail, we provide daily door-to-door luggage transfers. You simply turn up and pedal while your bags are safely moved to your next night’s accommodation.
Can I bring my own bike, or do you provide rentals?
We provide premium, well-maintained trail electric bikes (E-bikes) or sporty gravel bikes, all perfectly suited for the terrain. We also fully welcome cyclists who prefer to bring their own personal bikes on tour.
Tour Customisation & Skill Levels
What fitness level is required for the Great Taste Trail?
The trail accommodates all abilities, from beginners to advanced riders. Because we specialise in bespoke, independent, and small-group tours, we tailor the daily cycling distances, terrain (coastal paths, back roads, or gravel), and bike types to match your requests. We also don’t put strangers into tour groups so you ride the tour at a pace that suits you. One key recommendation is that you have ridden similar distances to those of your tour, so that you are ‘saddle fit’ even if you are going to use an e-bike.
Can your tours be customised for food, wine, or art interests?
Yes. We use our local knowledge to curate specific itineraries that focus on the
region’s artisan wines, local food, craft galleries, and coastal scenery, specifically around the Mapua, Upper Moutere, and Tasman taste clusters.
Safety, Weather & Booking Policies
What happens if it rains during my cycle tour?
Your safety and comfort are our priorities. In the event of poor weather, we activate a reliable backup itinerary (Plan B). This includes vehicle support to transport you and your gear safely past affected trail sections or directly to your next accommodation. If it was a really wet day, you could opt to take a lift and not cycle at all…you wouldn’t be the first customer to enjoy that option!
Are route maps and support provided for self-guided tours?
Yes. For independent cyclists, we provide detailed, up-to-date route notes, and cycle trail maps. Additionally, our team is always just a phone call away for any roadside support or assistance.
When should I book a cycling tour for the upcoming season?
We are currently accepting bookings for the 2026–27 cycling season. Because we focus on high-quality, personalised service for couples and small groups, we highly recommend enquiring early to secure your preferred type of accommodation.
What our cyclists are saying
. Nicky and Lisa are extremely responsive, friendly, and easy to work with. Most importantly, their local knowledge helped ensure that we got the most out of our week in the Nelson/Mapua/Abel Tasman area. We highly recommend Wheelie!”
To anyone who vaguely wants to cycle through to being an experienced cyclist, Wheelie Fantastic will certainly deliver more than the bike – you will not be disappointed. This amazing cycle service included pick ups and a range of cycling routes that made us want to return!”
“3 days, 100 odd kms (give or take), a few hills thrown in for good measure and stunning scenery. So much on offer here. Vineyards, views, mountain bike trails, leisurely trails, old pubs and coffee at Ginger Dynamite. My e-bike was fabulous. Power assist to help my pathetic legs up all those hills.
