Little Kaiteriteri is less well-known than it very close neighbour, Kaiteriteri. It’s a bit of an ‘open secret’, as it is the preferred destination for many locals when they want to go to relax on the beach and especially if they want to go for a swim. Casual swimmers enjoy the safe, shallow, crystal clear water and the more serious sea swimmers from the area meet here for weekly group swims in the summer.
The beach area has been home to Little Blue Penguins for a long time. Some local residents recently built wooden nesting boxes for their penguin neighbours. The Little Blue Penguins are shy birds and they choose wisely when they identified Little Kaiteriteri beach as home. It is an unspoilt beach with a natural sand dune reserve beyond the high tide mark.
The area is less busy than the main Kaiteriteri beach and has a very relaxed feel to it at all times of the year. Traveller reviews about Little Kaiteriteri sing it’s praises and make many New Zealanders rent a house here as their holiday base in the area. Some own their own ‘bach’ and for those who prefer the convenience and comforts of a B&B, there are only a few options. The long-established Everton B&B, is a 2 min stroll to the beach and a 10-minute walk to the centre of Kaiteriteri where the restaurants and cafes are. Diane and Martin, the Everton B&B owners, are locals who live here and share their lovely property with travellers from all over the globe. Their local knowledge gives their guests the up to date info on where to eat, or when high tide is, and just about anything else you might ever need to know about the area.
If you are looking for a serene and secluded little pocket of NZ, with creature comforts and a couple of minutes from The Great Taste Cycle Trail, then Little Kaiteriteri will tick all of your boxes.
